ABOUT THE ARTIST

Maria del Carmen Franco Baqueiro

Maria Franco is a Mexican artist born in 1997 in Mérida, Yucatán. She started painting and drawing since she was little, and took classes with several Mexican painters where she mastered the techniques of acrylic and oil painting. Now she is a Plastic Arts student at La Sorbonne University, and continuously exposes her paintings in the Parisian region.

Her paintings have always been figurative and aim to represent the Mexican people: children forced to work in the streets, the women or the indigenous communities among others. Her work is the result of an on going questioning about her origins and cultural heritage, as well as political research on how Latin American society works and why. Her tools of choice are inks and thin papers in big format. These allow a distinctive type of blending between the different colors and shapes, which creates an effect of a non-finished painting thanks to her quick gesture and determined touch. It communicates sensibility as well as a fragile and light aspect.

If she has always worked on rectangular formats and papers destined to be hanged on a wall, she is hanging more and more drawings in the streets of Paris, following the steps of street-art, in the search to denounce social inequalities in the outside world.
